We made our original recreation of the United Nations flag map for day 5 of the #30DayMapChallenge on X (Twitter at that time), since the UN was celebrating its 75th anniversary at the time (2020). We decided to do a new version of this map-based logo for noteworthy.graphics.
The recreation is based on the familiar blue-and-white flag version of the UN emblem. It uses an Azimuthal Equidistant projection with five concentric circles, built on a graticule spaced at 30° intervals of latitude and 45° of longitude. As specified in the original emblem, the map extends south to the 60th parallel.
We also matched the official colours of the United Nations emblem: white, centred on a light blue background (Pantone PMS 2925).
The original logo was designed by a team during the 1945 United Nations Conference on International Organization, led by Oliver Lincoln Lundquist.
