Residential electricity prices across the United States
This cartogram shows the average monthly retail price of electricity by state in the United States between April 2020 and April 2026. Across the US, residential electricity has climbed almost in all states but not in the same way.
In April 2026, the national average cost for residential electricity was around 19¢/kWh, up 7.3% from the year before, and up 42% since April 2020. Prices by state ranged from roughly 12¢/kWh in North Dakota (+5.4% since April 2025) to nearly 47¢/kWh in Hawaii (+9.8% since April 2025).
Each tile on this cartogram contains the state name, latest residential electricity price, and a sparkline that shows the evolution of this price since April 2020. The y-axis of the sparkline is matched with the minimum and maximum values for that specific tile. The shapes of the lines are there to show trends and highlight sudden jumps in price over the years.
Once a tile is tapped, it will expand and show a more detailed view including a line chart with tooltips to allow closer inspection of the values for each month. Here the scale is fixed for all states.
Data comes from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
